An Early Shopper’s Guide to Halloween Costume Savings

It’s the start of August and many of us have noticed that the Halloween costumes are already out at stores. I asked readers on BC’s Facebook Fan page when they’d like to start seeing Halloween costume deals and I was surprised to hear many people say, “Now!”. Well, you got it. Here’s an early shopper’s guide to Halloween costume savings. Enjoy!

  • Start shopping consignment stores and thrift stores now for the best selection. Used costumes are a great savings. After all, most kids only wear them once or twice.
  • Want a new costume? Now’s the time for early birds to do their research, but it’s not the best time to save. If you must browse costumes in the dog days of summer, start by making a list of possibilities and scout out a few retailers that carry your top picks. Write down the prices, and make your target price about 70% of full price (or less). Then keep an eye out for sales.
  • When should you buy? Expect big discounts on costumes starting the last week of September. Retailers will also offer shipping deals to help move their wares. Costumes at the Children’s Place were 30% off around the beginning of October last year. Kmart’s costumes were 25% off at that time. Kohls’ costumes were 20% off by 9/30. Selection should still be good at this time.
  • Procrastination means better prices, but less selection. Wait until mid-October to buy a costume and you’ll find prices of around 40% off. The Children’s Place costumes were “an extra 40% off” by 10/17 last year.

Readers, Share your advice below! Do you make your own costumes? If so, what are some easy ones to make? Do you buy your child’s costume? How much do you pay? Where do you find the best deals?

If you have an Old Navy outlet near you, often on major holidays they run a 40% off sale that covers the whole store including costumes. Last Labor Day, costumes were 40% off with a great selection still available.

  2. I used to make my own costumes every year, but since I have a 3 yr old it is harder to find time. I did however find some pretty cute costume online fore great deals.

My sister-in-law just picked up a costume for my daughter from Costco. It was a Carter’s costume and she got it for only $11.99. I’m not sure if they were just for the little guys, but she said there was a cow, pig, duck, ladybug, and a cat. The ladybug one she bought was super cute and warm! Just something to check out if you have a Costco near you!
