Parents. Do not put your baby in the pool in her regular disposable diapers. Not only is it icky, it will cause your baby’s diaper to swell in a way that looks seriously uncomfortable (me, learn that first hand? never!).
Are Splashers and Little Swimmers disposable swim pants the solution? They work okay in the water, but they’re expensive. My husband and I also learned the hard way that they don’t contain urine. They’re just designed to keep in solid matter. Some pools, like the one at our local YMCA, require rubberized swim pants and won’t even let you in with Splashers or Little Swimmers. You need a reusable swim diaper.
Many reusable swim diapers offer the leak protection that disposables don’t (or at least they claim to). Reusable swim diapers especially make sense if your child’s in the water a lot or if you live in a warm climate with a long swimming season. They cost just $9-$20, the cost of just one or two packs of disposables. They create much less waste, too.
Here’s a rundown of some popular reusable swim diapers. Some are made by cloth diaper manufacturers, while others are made by swim equipment companies. Some of them offer SPF protection. To find out where to buy them, just Google.
For Infants: Worn under a swimsuit or by themselves. (left to right)

- Swimmis by Bummis. These get great ratings at The Diaper Pin. (about $13)
- Imse Vimse (about $16). A popular choice. Seem to have a trimmer fit than the others listed here.
- Sun Smarties Adjustable Swim Diaper (One Step Ahead, about $13).
- Speedo: Also in trunks. ($9 to $10)
- Finis: ($10)
- MonkeyDoodles ($20) These get great ratings at The Diaper Pin.
For toddlers and preschoolers. These pull up like underwear or offer swimsuit/swim trunk styling with hidden, built in “protection.”

Great post! Reusable swim diapers just make sense to use during the summer if you plan on a lot of swimming. My son (who is currently 7 months old) currently swims in Bummis Swimmis size M and Monkey Doodlez size M. Both work well to contain the poop. Monkey Doodlez has contained pee just due to the nature of it having a very good fit across the tummy and around the legs. Downside? It’s harder to take off! And the one diaper I have seen not contain poop or pee? Disposable!
We use a disposable swim diaper inside a reusable one because I don’t want to deal with poop. We live in Florida which means we’re swimming almost daily May-October. The disposable swim diapers can be reused MANY times. I’ve used one for about 10 days before. You can just rinse and reuse or toss them in the washer for a proper cleaning to sanitize if you’re worried about urine. If the child poops you can just throw it away and your reusable diaper is still clean and you can keep on swimming. We buy our reusable swim pants at Target (Circo brand).

I love this post Angie! We have been using the Bummis swim diapers for swim lessons, and now for daycare and going to the pool this summer. We have saved quite a bit of money over disposables and they seem much more comfortable. Our daycare asked us to bring 2 swim diapers per day this summer, which would add up very quickly! A few of the other parents have inquired about reusable swim diapers after I brought it up as well.
