Updated: The BC Guide to Choosing a Play Kitchen [And Buy-It-Now Prices, Too]

The BC Guide to Choosing a Play KitchenPlay kitchens are on our all star toys list. They’re hits for both girls and boys from about age two to age five. With all the models out there, how can you pick the best play kitchen for your home?

This guide will help. It’s even got buy-it-now prices so you know when you’re getting a great deal. Enjoy!

  • Consider your space carefully. How much room do you have? Would a corner kitchen work better than a straight one? Take time to measure your available width and depth before your shop.
  • Consider your budget before you buy so that you won’t be tempted to spend more than you should. Kitchens list from about $60 to $300 and up.
  • Consider checking your favorite second-hand sources for a gently used kitchen.
  • Does then kitchen need to allow room for more than one kid to play at once? A larger kitchen or a kitchen with two-sided play can help avoid squabbles.
  • Do you care if the kitchen you choose requires batteries? Most of the plastic kitchens need them to power lights, bells, whistles, etc.
  • Don’t be afraid to get a “simple” kitchen. Kids are creative and will fill in for the missing bells and whistles with their imaginations. Electronic bells and whistles can get annoying for grownups, too.
  • Allow plenty of time for assembly. The wooden kitchens generally take longer to put together than the plastic kitchens.
  • Does the kitchen offer room for play food and utensil storage? If not, think about how you’ll corral those small pieces.
  • Be prepared to secure the kitchen to the wall if you think there’s any possibility of tipping.

Popular Kitchens and Buy-It-Now Prices

All of these kitchens are top sellers with great ratings. I’ve linked to these kitchens at Amazon so that you can learn more and read customer reviews. Unless otherwise noted, the appropriate age for these kitchens is 3 and up.

“Buy It Now” prices are what I consider “very good” prices on the item. They’re the best sale prices you can expect to find fairly regularly, based on records of previous sales. Don’t confuse these with the “lowest price ever” price. You may be able to  beat this price if you happen onto a unusually great sale.

Note that the buy-it-now prices may be up to 45% of the list prices. Expect to see lots of deals on play kitchens in the weeks starting after Halloween.

We bought a small kitchen (Educo at Amazon) for our daughter last christmas. It needed to sit in our kitchen, so we didn’t want it to stand out, or be taller than our kitchen counter. We chose a simple wooden version. She loves it and cooks when I do. A play kitchen doesn’t need to be a monstrosity – I absolutely agree that a smaller version brings out creativity and encourages kids to be resourceful.

  2. Lauren says:

You need to update your Buy-It-Now Price on the Ikea Duktig! They dropped the price to an awesome $79 in July. We love this kitchen!

  3. Done. Thanks!

  4. Lauren says:

    Awesome, thanks!

Just bought the Step2 Lifestyle Delux for $180 at TRU on “clearance”. It was a few weeks ago but big items like that don’t tend to fly off the shelves so it’s worth checking on if you are considering that one!

On November 28, 2011 (Cyber Monday I think) we purchased the KidKraft Deluxe Let’s Cook Kitchen for $104.36 from Sears (free shipping, a coupon code, and tax of $8.40 included)! This is below the buy it now price you have, but not by a lot.

Anyway – PERFECT for our daughter who was 18 months last Christmas. It too resides in our kitchen, next to a baker/wine rack. It has a lot of fun extras like the clock on the side, the microwave, shelf above sink for her “spices” and cook books. We also purchased the KidKraft pots and pans set. Many reviews constantly complained about the size, and they are a bit small, BUT they fit perfectly on the stove burners, so it’s not a problem. Best purchase ever!

We bought the Step 2 Grand Walk-In Kitchen last year. I had been watching different kitchens, on the Saturday after Black Friday, Step2 put the kitchen on sale for $180 + FREE shipping (it was at least a $60 value!). I was going to get my daughter one from TRU, but with the shipping charges, it was about $20 more to get this one. My daughter and son started playing it as soon as I got up the first side of the kitchen. They LOVE it, and it’s roomy enough that the two of them can play, plus my niece that I keep during the week.

FYI KidKraft Uptown Espresso Kitchen $115 at amazon.com with free shipping with amazon prime right now 🙂

  10. barrie says:

Thank you for this article!! Kitchen shopping is OVERWHELMING!! I love the Grand Walk-In, but it’s too much haha. I think I’m going to get the KidKraft Uptown!

  11. Barrie says:

I felt a little weird getting my daughters Christmas present on Craigslist but I wanted to see if there was anything good out there. Well! Just yesterday morning a woman posted a step 2 with a bunch of accessories for $50. Looks like its in PERFECT condition! I’m getting it tomorrow!! Woohoo!!

  12. Christie says:

Toys R Us currently has the Kidkraft Grand Gourmet Corner Kitchen for under $100 and the Kidkraft Large Kitchen for under $80.

  13. Shanna H. says:

I just bought the step2 lifestyle deluxe kitchen on step2.com for $167…this includes shipping and tax! Its priced at $179.99 on the Step2 site and there is a $30 off coupon code going on…suppose to expire yesterday, but it worked for me today: S2DDLX13

This brings it waaaaay below the buy it now price!

  14. Marrika says:

The Melissa and Doug Cook’s Corner Kitchen just dropped to $49 on Amazon, and I snapped it up!
